About Basics of Music

Music Learning Resources for your University Music course, High School, or Music Studio

"The Basics of Music (App) helps students master music theory through its highly effective teaching and well designed online drills. This innovative, easy to use app keeps students focused and motivated, and makes learning easy and fun!"
Emily Hung, DMA —Faculty Orange Coast College

Basics of Music resources were created and designed taking into account day-to-day feedback from students in Music Fundamentals, Theory, Piano, and Guitar courses over many years. It was created by Dr. Scott Wolf, a professional musician and college music professor who regularly teaches music online and in the classroom. He wanted a better tool for music students to hone their skills in a modern and fun way, and when he couldn't find a high quality and affordable resource for his students, he created one.

This app is primarily designed as an online replacement for Music Fundamentals and Theory I textbooks, workbooks, and music reading, theory, and rhythm drills. We have additional resources for instrument-specific exercises in guitar, piano, and violin (looking for something else? Let us know!). It gives instructors clear and logical learning resources with reliable, flexible, auto-graded online assignments that integrate seamlessly with Learning Management Systems like Canvas, D2L Brightspace, and Schoology.

Instructor accounts are always free. Students purchase an Access Pass for a flexible amount of time:

  • 4 weeks (28 days): $10
  • 8 weeks (56 days): $18
  • 12 weeks (84 days): $25
  • 18 weeks (126 days): $30
  • 24 weeks (168 days): $36
